Jeffrey Lotz, PhD

Dr. Lotz is co-PI of C-DOCTOR and the UCSF site PI. As founding director of the NIH Core Center for Musculoskeletal Biology in Medicine and the Orthopaedic Surgery Industry Research Center, he wields extensive experience in building consensus among various groups and delivering value to stakeholders. His network of professional colleagues and experience in presenting pre-clinical data to the FDA, forming companies that are now in clinical trials, developing diagnostic tools, and testing biologic therapies contribute to the success of C-DOCTOR.

Dr. Chai is co-PI of C-DOCTOR and the USC site PI. With over 140 peer-reviewed papers, he has extensive experience in investigating the molecular and cellular regulatory mechanisms of craniofacial development and stem cells and securing NIH funding. His commitment to improving patient care through regenerative medicine and tissue engineering drives the success of C-DOCTOR.

Dr. Jamieson is the Internal Resource Director of Regulatory/Reimbursement for C-DOCTOR and assists the ITP teams in identifying regulatory and reimbursement strategies. He has an in-depth understanding of what industries’ expectations are with respect to working with academic researchers and what steps are needed to improve the current model for the translation of academic-based research projects. Dr. Jamieson's experience guides C-DOCTOR’s development of best practices for calibration, validation, and qualification of equipment, as well as data reproducibility.

Scott Fraser, PhD

Dr. Fraser is a USC site PI. He has over 200 publications and dozens of patents and has founded extensive imaging, engineering, and research centers at USC, CHLA, and Caltech. These accomplishments, along with his experience in performing multidisciplinary studies of the cellular and molecular bases of complex biological phenomena, contribute to the C-DOCTOR’s ability to foster interaction between different groups of researchers and translate new results into clinical utility.

Dr. Healy is the site PI at UC Berkeley. He leads an interdisciplinary group that focuses on bioinspired stem cell microenvironments to control stem cell lineage specification and self-organization into microtissues, bioinspired systems for regenerative medicine, biological interfaces, and microphysiological systems for drug development, gene editing, and toxicity screening. His insight on the interface between biology and materials science to develop engineered systems for fundamental biological phenomena and translational medicine applications is vital to C-DOCTOR.

Dr. Lane is a key consultant on the C-DOCTOR leadership council. She has extensive experience in developing technologies to address salivary gland regeneration, craniofacial tissues, and rheumatic diseases, as well as expertise in performing IND-enabling studies. She is a vital member of the C-DOCTOR leadership council and offers her expertise, network with contract research organizations, and intimate knowledge of all projects in the portfolio to advise member projects and guide them to success.

Dr. Longaker is the Stanford University site PI. Dr. Longaker has considerable experience as a surgeon-scientist directing large research programs at Stanford University, evident through a record of successful and productive research projects in skeletal stem cells, adipose-derived stromal cells, craniofacial biology, bone tissue engineering, and wound repair. His experience and expertise in both clinical research and administration are vital to C-DOCTOR’s ability to develop effective research plans, timelines, and budgets to further the success of multiple projects.

Dr. Urata is a site PI at USC. Holding significant positions of leadership at CHLA, Keck School of Medicine, and USC Ostrow School of Dentistry, he has developed new techniques to improve current procedures and looked at the outcomes of these novel surgical procedures to treat rare conditions such as Pierre Robin Sequence in addition to cleft lip and palate. Dr. Urata is pivotal to C-DOCTOR through his recruitment of clinical advisors and his experience in shepherding a translational medicine project to bring a treatment from bench to bedside.

Dr. Wu is a key consultant on the C-DOCTOR leadership council. His research has made significant contributions in tissue repair/regeneration and manufacturing of medical devices as evidenced by his 230+ peer-reviewed articles and 20 issued patents. Dr. Wu provides necessary guidance to C-DOCTOR through his work in the biofabrication of biomaterials systems to deliver cells, proteins, and genes to promote the repair of hard and soft tissues; manufacturing medical devices using bioengineering approaches; and pioneering contributions to 3D printing of biomedical devices.

Operations Committee

The Operations Committee (OC) Leadership serves as the primary liaisons between the Leadership Council and the administrative staff at partner sites and ITP home institutions. The OC is vital in supporting ITPs, enabling them to make maximal use of the C-DOCTOR resources available to them.
